Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine differences of metabolic equivalent(MET) according to Dancesport event(Chacha, Jive), degree of skill(athletics, beginner), and sex(male, female) of Dancesport and to investigate step unit energy expenditure estimate(SUEEE)(e.g. cal/kg/step) converted from time unit energy expenditure(e.g. ml/kg/min). The subjects of this study was total 223(athletic 20:male=10, femal=10; beginner 203: male=102, female=101) collected from five university student and was measured number of step(Yamax SW-650) and MET(Cosmed K4b2) simultaneously performing dance for four minute. Mean differences of MET between ChaCha and Jive, athletic and beginner, and male and female was tested(a=.05) using three-way ANOVA in SPSS 11.0 version. In the result, Jive group(4.92±1.20) was greater(P<.001) than ChaCha group(4.34±1.20), athletic group(6.41±1.57) was greater(P<.001) than beginner group(4.27±0.95), and male(4.87±1.44) was greater(P<.001) than female(4.37±1.17). The each SUEEE of 8(Dancesport event2×degree of skill2×sex2) conducted from MET was that ChaCha athletic male is 0.96 cal/kg/step, ChaCha athletic female is 0.75 cal/kg/step, ChaCha beginner male is 0.59 cal/kg/step, and ChaCha beginner female is 0.50 cal/kg/step. In case of Jive, SUEEE was that Jive athletic male 0.79cal/kg/step, Jive athletic female 0.62cal/kg/step, Jive beginner male 0.48cal/kg/step, and Jive beginner female 0.44cal/kg/step. In conclusion, SUEEE(cal/kg/step) gained from pedometer is expected to motivate person who are going to consume energy through Dancesport for his/her health. Future studies should take other Dancesport event(e.g. Samba, Rumba, & Paso doble etc.) into consideration.
