본 연구는 학생들의 고등학교 계열 선택을 중심으로 사회과 학업 성취도 및 흥미도의 변화를 추정하여 ‘작은 연못안의 큰물고기(Big-Fish-Little-Pond)’ 효과를 분석하기 위한 것이다. 학업 성취도에 관련된 분석에서 자기선택(self-selection)으로 인해 야기되는 추정치의 편의 문제를 해결하기 위해 패널 모형을 사용하였다. 분석 결과 고등학교 계열 선택에 따른 사회과 학업 성취도와 흥미도의 변화에 BFLP 효과는 나타나지 않았다. 다만, 자기효능감이 학업성취도에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하여 향후 사회과 교육에서 자기 효능감을 높이는 수업에 주목할 필요가 있음을 나타냈다. BFLP 효과가 없음은 국어, 영어, 수학, 과학 등 다른 과목의 학업 성취도와 흥미도를 이용하더라도 동일하게 나타났다.
Abstract
This study intends to examine the Big-Fish-Little-Pond effects for students at carrier-oriented highschool compared to general highschool. For this purpose, we analyzes the effects of highschool selection on the achievement and interest on social studies using 1st to 4th Korea Education and Employment Panel data. For the analysis on the students' achievements with regard to the types of highschool, it is often of interest to resolve the self-selection issue that results in biased estimator of the ordinary least squares estimator. To resolve this issue we adopt panel models. In particular, we use random effect panel models for estimating the effects of time-invariant variables while using fixed effect panel models for time-varying variables according to the results of Hausman tests. From the panel analysis we found that self-efficiency is an important factor for the achievement on social studies. However, there is no evidence for Big-Fish-Little-Pond effects of highschool selection on the achievement and interest on social studies. These results are robust regardless of subjects including korean, english, mathematics and science.
