Abstract
The purpose of this statistical study is to measure social studies teachers' pedagogical attitude towards homosexuality and to suggest implications for multicultural citizenship education in Korea. Based on the previous research findings on heterosexuals' homophobia, the researcher developed PATH scale (Pedagogical Attitude Towards Homosexuality) and conducted a national survey on social studies teachers at general high schools. Using the method of stratified sampling, the researcher selected a list of 500 teachers across the nation. Total 365 questionnaires (out of 500) were analyzed for this study. In order to figure out the variables that have significant impacts on the teachers' pedagogical attitudes towards homosexuality, reliability test, factor analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were applied to this data set. In sum, this study found the dependent variable(=PATH_ALL) consists of two factors, not one, suggesting that the teachers' pedagogical attitude towards homosexuality represents multiple factors. Authoritarian personality, sex, age group, personal contact with homosexuals, teacher's perspective on subject matter education, and religious orientation are those which have statistically significant effects on the dependent variable. The findings of this study suggest that the academic discourse of multicultural citizenship education in Korea should embrace the concept of sexuality and develop preservice and inservice teacher education curricula to understand the voices of social minorities.
