Abstract
Wald(1947) addressed the issues of sample size or test length by developing a Sequential Probability Ratio Test(SPRT). In SPRT, the desired test length is determined by taking into account four parameters: (a) probability of false mastery/positive classifications, defined as alpha; (b) probability of false non-mastery/negative classifications, defined as beta; (c) minimum level of skill for mastery classification, defined as theta0; and (d) minimum level of skill for non-mastery classification, defined as theta1. There are however, some limitations to the original SPRT work including complexity in calculation process, labor-intensiveness, and requiring ample statistical knowledge for physical educators. In addition, four parameters (i.e., alpha, beta, theta0, and theta1) could vary depending on the psychomotor skill tests, which would make traditional SPRT score sheets not feasible for physical educators under regular class settings. Thus, developing a computerized SPRT achievement test holds great promise in physical education. Computers have several advantages over the traditional methods such as, it may shorten the amount of time and effort spent by physical educators and it is usually easy to use and can be used with a variety of different motor skill tests. The purpose of this study is to develop and introduce a computerized SPRT program for the repeat-trial psychomotor skill tests. Compared to traditional SPRT score sheets, the computerized SPRT test is written using MS-EXCEL and Visual Basic, and it has an easy to use interactive dialog box. The computer program will help refine the assessments for the students performed by the skilled pedagogy teachers and offers a potential sound measurement device for physical educations researcher.
