사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육 체계화 연구

초록

본 연구는 사회과의 교과 특성을 살린 미디어 리터러시 교육을 체계적으로 진행하기 위해 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육의 목표, 영역, 학교급별 학습 요소를 도출하는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 초·중·고등학교 현장 교사 12명과 대학교수 12명을 전문가 집단으로 선정하여 3차에 걸쳐 델파이 조사를 실시하였다. 델파이 조사 결과를 종합하여 도출한 사회과 미디어 리터러시 체계화 안에 대한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학교 교육에서 미디어 리터러시 교육의 필요성에 대한 현장 교사 및 전공자들의 공감대를 확인하였다. 둘째, 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육의 목표를 밝히면서 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육이 무엇인지, 교육의 주안점을 어디에 두고 있는지, 그리고 함양하고자 하는 역량은 무엇인지에 대한 큰 방향을 제시하였다. 셋째, 미디어에 대한 기초적인 이해와 미디어를 대하는 자세, 미디어에 접근하고 관련 내용을 비판적으로 분석하고 평가할 수 있는 역량, 미디어 환경에서 적절히 표현하고 소통할 수 있는 역량, 미디어 관련 문제와 시민으로서의 자세, 미디어와 관련된 권리와 책임에 대한 내용으로 구성된 세부 목표로 다섯 가지를 도출하였다. 넷째, 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육의 내용 영역을 “미디어에 대한 이해”, “미디어와 개인”, “미디어와 사회”, “미디어와 시민의 역할”의 네 가지로 제시하였다. 다섯째, 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육을 위한 영역별 학습 목표를 상술하여 각 영역별로 4개씩 총 16개를 제시하였으며, 학습 요소를 지식, 기능, 가치 및 태도로 구분하여 내용체계표로 제시하였다. 이와 같이 개발된 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육 체계화 안은 기존 미디어 리터러시 교육 논의의 한계를 극복하고자 한 결과물로서, 사회과 미디어 리터러시 교육 고유의 정체성을 형성하는 데에 기여할 수 있으며, 향후 사회과에서 일회성의 미디어 리터러시 교육이 아닌 장기적 관점에서의 미디어 리터러시 교육이 이루어지는 데에 기초가 될 것이다. 훌륭한 시민 양성을 목표로 하고 있는 사회과교육의 영역 안에 시민으로서 갖추어야 할 역량인 미디어 리터러시 함양을 위한 교육이 체계적으로 이루어지기를 기대한다.

Abstract

This study was conducted to derive a systematization of media literacy education that incorporates the characteristics of social studies education. The systematization of media literacy education in social studies includes goals, areas, and learning elements for each school level. To this end, a Delphi survey was conducted over three phases, selecting 12 in-service teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as 12 university professors as experts. Based on the Delphi survey results, the research findings within the social studies media literacy education framework are as follows. First, we found a consensus among in-service teachers and experts on the need for media literacy education in schools. Second, the study provided a broad direction on what media literacy education in social studies education is, where its educational emphasis lies, and what competencies need to be fostered, while outlining its goals. Third, five specific objectives were identified: a basic understanding of media and attitudes towards media; the ability to access media, critically analyze, and evaluate media-related content; the ability to express and communicate appropriately in a media environment; media-related issues and attitudes as citizens; and rights and responsibilities related to media. Fourth, the content areas of media literacy education in social studies were presented as ‘Understanding Media’, ‘Media and the Individual’, ‘Media and Society’, and ‘The Role of Citizens in Media’. Fifth, the learning objectives for each area were provided, with a total of 16 objectives consisting of knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes for each area, presented in a content structure matrix. The systematization of social studies media literacy education developed in this study is a result of overcoming the limitations of the previous studies on media literacy education. It can contribute to forming the distinct identity of social studies media literacy education. Moreover, it will be the foundation for media literacy education in social studies from long-term perspective, not a short-term perspective. The authors hope that media literacy education will be well-established within the field of social studies education, which aims to foster good citizens.
