Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between accelerometer-measured physical activity and both cardiometabolic disease and osteoarthritis in Korean older adults. We analyzed data from 2017 Korea National and Nutrition Examination Survey (KHANES), a nationally representative, cross-sectional survey in South Korean older adults (n=398). The participants were categorized into two groups based on accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (higher MVPA group, ≧ 20 min/day, lower MVPA group < 20 min/day). Demographic and physical characteristics, physical activity levels, blood pressure, lipid profiles, TG/HDL, and grip strength were observed. The associations between MVPA with cardiometabolic disease and osteoarthritis were assessed using multiple logistic regression with adjustments for potential covariates. The present study determined that individual with higher MVPA had lower waist circumference, visceral adipocity index, tryglycerides, fasting glucose, HbA1C, and TG/HDL (p<.05). In addition, individual with lower MVPA showed significantly worse outcomes such as HDL-C and grip strength. Odds ratios for cardiometabolic risk factors (hypertension; 2.75, diabetes; 1.69, metabolic syndrome; 2.29) and bone disease (osteoarthritis; 1.87) increased with individual with lower MVPA. Lower MVPA older adults were strongly associated with cardiometabolic disease and osteoarthritis. The findings of this study provide insight into possible strategies to improve in cariometabolic and bone health by participating MVPA during the elderly stage of life.
