Abstract

This study sought to identify the impact of discrimination on adolescents' human rights consciousness through personal evaluation of their own human rights, as well as the moderating effect of human rights education, in order to explore ways to promote human rights consciousness. To achieve this, publicly available data from the 2023 Children and Adolescents' Human Rights Report conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI) was employed, with data from all 5,595 respondents (51.1% male) analyzed. The analysis was conducted using Process Macro to verify mediating, moderating, and moderated mediating effects, with bootstrapping applied to confirm the significance of indirect effects. The results of the study revealed the following: first, evaluation of their own human rights clarifies the relationship between adolescents' experiences of discrimination and their human rights consciousness. Second, both evaluation of their own human rights and human rights education experience had a positive effect on human rights consciousness, and human rights educational experiences were found to have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between evaluation of their own human rights and human rights consciousness. Third, the moderating mediating effect of human rights educational experiences were significant in the effects of experiences of discrimination on human rights consciousness through evaluation of their own human rights. This study provides foundational data for discussing the direction and effectiveness of human rights education as an intervention measure for human rights consciousness.
