Abstract

This study aims to analyze the 2022 revised Social Studies curriculum through the lens of constitutional education. To achieve this, the study analyzed content from the ‘Social Studies’ of the common curriculum, the ‘Integrated Social Studies 1, 2’ of the elective-centered curriculum (common subjects), and the ‘Politics’ and ‘Law and Society’ of the elective-centered curriculum (career selection subjects), using the framework for analyzing constitutional education elements proposed in previous studies. The analysis showed the content related to the history of the constitution was insufficient. The fundamental principles of the constitution were generally addressed appropriately, further explanations of the constitution and the relationship between democracy and the rule of law were needed. Regarding sequence, the relevant content in ‘Integrated Social Studies 1, 2’ was lacking. The scope of fundamental rights focused appropriately on the overview of fundamental rights, but lacked coverage on the conflict of fundamental rights, obligations, and showed the overemphasis on the right to work. Additionally, the high school curriculum’s sequence was inadequate. The scope of the governance structure was appropriately focused on the separation of powers, but the high school level sequence was inadequate. Based on these findings, the study suggests the need to expand constitutional education to include the history of the constitution, the connection between fundamental rights and governance structures, and the conflict of fundamental rights and obligations. It is also recommended to improve the sequence between the high school and lower grade curriculum, particularly in ‘Integrated Social Studies 1, 2.’
