Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore ways to pursue human rights education measures in response to climate change in social studies classes. For this purpose, the literature review method was utilized. In terms of considering social change and academic discussions in the composition of social studies education content, theoretical discussions on inequality and human rights issues due to climate change were examined. In addition, it was investigated whether achievement standards for human rights education in response to climate change were presented in the 2022 revised social studies curriculum. Based on this analysis, human rights education measures in response to climate change in social studies education were suggested. The relevant contents are as follows. First, in terms of the rights of student-adolescents related to climate change and in terms of ecological transformation education emphasized in the 2022 revised curriculum, it was found to be necessary to conduct human rights education in response to climate change in social studies. Second, in the content of human rights education in response to climate change, ‘the causes and aspects of inequality caused by climate change, vulnerability, various countermeasures, and just transformation’ should be treated as important content. Third, human rights education classes in response to climate change should allow students to claim their rights and seek countermeasures through activities such as ‘citizen deliberation, social movement projects, and formative legal education’.
