곽종석의 성리학적 특징 고찰

Abstract

This paper examines the neo-confucian characteristics of Myeonwoo(Kwak Jong-seok, 1846~1919). Myeonwoo interprets Li and Gi as a confrontational relationship between value superiority and inferiority, such as heavy and light, fundamental and terminal, precious and humble, and good and evil. If Li preside over and control the Gi, Li must be given a practical and active status. As if the general ordered his soldier, the chaotic world of reality can maintain order only under Li's active presidency. This is the basic position of recognizing the Li and Gi of Myeonwoo. Insim and dosim are also interpreted in a confrontational structure. Myeonwoo divides the insim and the dosim into Juli/Jugi or Libal/Gibal. Li and Gi are together in the insim, but Gi is the main spirit, so it responds to the form, and Li and Gi are also in the dosim, but Li is the main spirit, so it responds to morality. In addition, the dosim can be said to be "libal" because it is the main spirit of Li, and the insim can be said to be "gibal" because it is the main spirit of Gi. As such, the confrontational structure of Li/Gi or dosim/insim is close to Toegye's theory and is clearly distinguished from Yulgok's theory.
