Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the fundamental perspective of contemporary Korean eco-philosopher Rhie Tschum-Mo on ecological labor, as well as the distinctive features of his interpretation of Donghak based on that perspective. Rhie identifies the root cause of today’s ecological crisis in the severe rupture between agrarian spirituality (農性) and commercial-industrial spirituality (商工性). While the latter relentlessly pursues the domination of nature for human self-centered enjoyment and celebrates technological advancement, the former—characterized by compassion for the vulnerable—remains critical of such progress. Historically and philosophically, these two spiritualities have remained divided and antagonistic. As a vivid example of this dichotomy, Rhie refers to the Warring States period in China: thinkers such as Mozi and Xunzi embody commercial-industrial tendencies, whereas Laozi and Zhuangzi articulate a philosophical orientation grounded in foraging-based agriculture. Mencius and the Zhongyong (Doctrine of the Mean) exhibit a tendency to mediate between the two. According to Rhie, overcoming this divide is key to addressing the ecological crisis. He argues that hope for ecological restoration lies in a life-centered movement of nature, in which transformative technologies and distributive practices are organically integrated to serve the purpose of sustaining life. Building upon this ecological theory of labor, Rhie reinterprets nineteenth-century Donghak thought. He locates the ecological character of Donghak in its historical confrontation with Western modernity and its critical stance toward Western learning (Seohak). Rhie evaluates Choe Je-u’s teaching of Si-cheon-ju (侍天主, “serving the Lord of Heaven”) as an implicit critique of the commercial-industrial spirituality inherent in Western modernity. Furthermore, drawing on Choe Si-hyeong’s idea of “feeding Heaven with Heaven” (以天食天), Rhie interprets this as an expression of nature’s self-sacrificial character, which grounds the ethical imperative of revering (敬) nature. He also identifies in Choe Si-hyeong’s discourse on sincerity (誠論) an early conceptual seed of ecological labor, noting that it diverges from classical Confucianism by emphasizing the working attitudes of farmers, merchants, and laborers. In conclusion, Rhie argues that in order for humanity to transition toward an ecological civilization, we must recover the ecological spirit and technological ethos embodied in the cooperative labor of foraging agriculture—where nature and humans work together. From this foundation, even commercial and industrial practices must be transformed into ecologically integrated technologies.
