Abstract

This study examined if a parental education program based on the Model of Goal-directed Behavior[MGB] effectively changes parent support behavior, and if the changes in parent support behavior affect children's physical activity and social skills. The ABA design method among the single-subject study methods was employed to achieve the research purpose. The research participants were five parents who have a child with a developmental disability and their children who were participating in a physical activity program at the D Rehabilitation Sports Center located in Nowon-gu, Seoul All those participants were conveniently recruited. The parental education program was implemented in 8 sessions with 30 to 100 minutes per session once a week. The experimental procedure was conducted for a total of 14 sessions, including 3 baseline sessions, 8 intervention programs, and 3 maintenance sessions. The parental support behavior was assessed 14 times using the Parental Physical activity Support Questionnaire [PPSQ], the amount of children's moderate to vigorous physical activity was objectively assessed 6 times using the GEVEActiv accelerometer, and social skills were assessed 14 times using the Social Skills Rating System [SSRS] for teachers. For final data analysis, data of four participants were included, except for one that showed many missing values in the physical activity data. As a result, parental education showed a level and tendency to increase the frequency of parental support behavior. In addition, it was found that the level and tendency of children's moderate to high intensity physical activity and social skills changed in the same way as the frequency of parental support behavior increased. In conclusion, it is considered that the parental education intervention program gives positive changes to parental support behavior, and positive changes in parental support can promote children's physical activity and social skills. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that more diverse and useful parental education programs, considering the practical contexts, are developed, and that those programs play a catalyst role in promoting physical activity and social skills of children with developmental disabilities.
