Abstract

This study examined whether there are positive changes in physical activity levels of parents and their children with developmental disabilities after participated in a parent program based on the Model of Goal-directed Behavior (MGB) using a single-subject based ABA design. The participants were four parents and their four children with developmental disabilities in physical activity programs at a rehabilitative sports center in Seoul. The parental education program consisted of eight sessions, each lasting between 30 and 100 minutes, once a week. The experiment was administered for 14 sessions, including 3 baseline, 8 intervention, and 3 maintenance sessions. GEVEActiv accelerometers (Activinsights, UK) were used six times to objectively measure moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels in parents and children. The final analysis only included physical activity data that met the threshold of wearing the device at least 10 hours per day for at least four days. As a result, there was a tendency showing the level of parental physical activity increases after participation in the parental education program, and an increase in the level of parental physical activity tended to lead to an increase in the level of physical activity of children with developmental disabilities. In conclusion, this study suggests that the parental education intervention may positively change parents' own physical activity participation behavior, and in turn positive changes in parents' physical activity participation may positively influence their children's physical activity promotion. Based on the results of the current study, it is hoped that various timely parental education programs are developed to promote physical activity participation of children with developmental disabilities.
