Abstract
This study evaluated the moderating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between character strengths and depression. The study surveyed 502 respondents aged 19 to 34 years on their character strengths, self-compassion, and depression levels. Depression, the dependent variable was regressed on the total score of the character strengths measures and the measures for each of the six virtues (wisdom, humanity, courage, temperance, justice, and transcendence), as well as self-compassion. The results indicate that, (1) the total character strengths score significantly predicted the measure of depression, and this relation was moderated by self-compassion such that the impact of character strengths on depression was significantly greater in the average and above-average groups than in the below-average group, (2) Moreover, the six virtues significantly predicted the depression measure, and (3) self-compassion moderated the impacts on depression of humanity, courage, temperance, and transcendence, but not of wisdom or justice. We discuss the study’s limitations and suggest potential future research directions.
