Abstract
This study examines the trajectory of fear and depression among Koreans during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies the influencing factors behind these emotions. Data was collected at five time points, spaced four months apart, ranging from April 13, 2020, to March 14, 2022. First, the shift in fear and depression displayed a quadratic pattern, initially increasing at the 1T and gradually decreasing at the 3T. Second, after incorporating demographic and non-daily factors to understand the influences on changes in fear and depression caused by COVID-19, it was found that non-daily variables had a significantly positive effect on both fear and depression throughout the year. Gender influenced the initial levels of fear and depression. Cohabitation with elders had a significant impact on the primary and secondary rates of change in depression. The findings of this study can serve as a foundation for exploring policy alternatives to improve the mental health of Koreans in possible future pandemics.
