Abstract

This study was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of the stigma experienced by adults who became disabled due to traffic accidents and how they coped with it. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 adults who acquired disabilities from traffic accidents, and the data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological research method. The study identified the structure of the stigma experience among people with acquired disabilities, consisting of 5 components and 20 sub-components, and the structure of coping with stigma, consisting of 7 components and 20 sub-components. The components of the stigma experience include ‘sadness of being neglected,’ ‘feeling stoned by my existence,’ ‘skeptical alienation from being excluded,’ ‘unfairness of being condemned as a group‘s fault,’ and ‘suffering deeper within a family.’ Based on these findings, implications for stigma reduction interventions are discussed.
