Abstract

Korean thoughts have developed with tight relationship with Chinese thoughts. Thus, comparative study between Korean thought and Chinese thought is necessary for proper understanding of Korean thoughts. For successful comparative study, an inquiry into proper method is also needed. Methodological considerations of comparative studies have not been done as much as comparative studies itself. In this essay, I attempted to seek the method of comparative study between Korean thoughts and Chinese thoughts based on past comparative studies between Lo Chin-sun and Korean Confucians. Lo Chin-sun was a Confucian of the Ming dynasty who attempted to reactivate Neo-Confucianism. Once his philosophy was introduced into Joseon, Korean Confucians from early to late Joseon period discussed it with a depth. They compared Lo's philosophy with Korean Confucians'. And some comparative researches between Lo and Korean Confucians have been conducted by modern interpreters as well. Firstly, I review comparative studies done in Joseon, and move to studies of modern days. I attempt to make new method based on the past methods on this subject. I divided the methods into general and specific. The specific methods are comparative studies in reference with each circumstance, of original texts, of subject expansion, of philosophical topic, of commonality, of interdisciplinary, modern thoughts. The general methods are method of analytic and synthetic, that of synthesizing vital force and pattern, that of perspective from vital force, and that of perspective from pattern. The last two methods were modern transformation used by Korean Confucians.
