이 글에서는 洛學의 지적 전통에서 湖洛論辨과 관련된 頤齋 黃胤錫의 기록을 검토하는 한편, 당대 호남을 대표하는 지식인의 호남에 대한 자의식이 어떠했는지를 연계시켜 살펴보려는 목적에서 작성된 것이다. 황윤석은 호학과 낙학의 시말을 기록하는 글에서 그러한 분기현상의 원인과 쟁점, 그리고 말기적 상황으로 치닫는 과정을 낙학적 시각에서 정리하고 있다. 특히 그는 일반적인 의미의 기(氣)와는 구별된 마음의 독특한 영역을 강조하였다는 점을 스승 김원행의 사상적 특징으로 제시하고 있다. 김원행을 정점으로 낙학의 사상적 전통이 점차 희박해져 가는 상황에서 호남출신 유학자로서 황윤석의 선택지 역시 좁혀져 갔다. 비록 황윤석이 박물학적인 관심으로 변모하는 사회상을 담아내려고 노력했지만 국정의 운영이나 북학의 수용에 있어 실질적인 주체가 되지는 못했다. 또한 당대 호남을 대표하는 유학자로서 지역문화에 대한 남다른 애정을 지니고 있었지만, 호남에 대한 편견은 좀처럼 해소되지 않고 있었다. 황윤석은 호남의 편견을 시정하려는 노력차원에서 河西 金麟厚(1510∼1560)에 대한 남다른 관심을 보였다. 심성논의가 지리한 공허함으로 빠져들거나 정쟁의 도구로 전락된 상황을 넘어서 유학의 기풍을 쇄신할 필요가 있었던 것이다. 그동안 호남에서 그다지 주목하지 않았던 김인후의 학문이나 인격은 결코 호남차원에 국한되었던 것이 아니기 때문이다. 김원행 역시 김인후의 문묘종사 문제를 거론하면서 호남의 관심을 촉구시켰다. 이러한 스승의 영향은 같은 호남출신이기도 하였던 황윤석이 낙학의 전통을 계승할 뿐 아니라 김인후로 대표되는 호남의 전통을 재정립하고자 노력하는 적극적 계기가 되었다. 특히 그의 지역문화에 깊은 애정과 노력이 있었기에 오늘날까지 황윤석이 호남유학에 남다른 의미를 남길 수 있었던 것이다.
Abstract
Ichae Hwang Yunsŏk (頤齋 黃胤錫: 1729∼1791) left a massive amount of data that lively reveals various aspects of intellectual tradition of Chosun Confucianism as if we are on a time machine ride. This paper especially looks into his records regarding Horaknonbyŏn (湖洛論辨: intellectual debates between Ho and Nak school of Confucianism) in the tradition of Nakhak (洛學), with the intention to see it in its relation to the Honam identity through the representative Honam scholar of the time. The issues of Horaknonbyŏn that divided the Ho and Nak school were the differing views on the comprehensive understandings surrounding the human and nature. Hwang Yunsŏk, who had affinity to the Nak school through the family and schooling actively, supported the position of Nak. In his writing about the beginning and the end of Ho and Nak school discussion, he showed his Nak allegiance as he synthesized the causes and issues of Ho and Nak school division and the debate's ultimate debacle. He particularly pointed out that his teacher Kim Wonhaeng(金元行) emphasized the unique domain of human mind that was not identical with the general sense of Qi(氣) as a characteristic approach of the Nak school. While Hwang Yunsŏk tried to capture the socially changing atmosphere that pursued the broad learning, he did not become a substantial agent for the acceptance of Qing(淸) cultures or the administration of the state. As a representative Honam scholar of the time, he showed unusual affection for the regional culture. Nonetheless, the prejudice against Honam region was hardly abated. As his effort to overcome the Honam prejudice, he showed exceptional interests in Kim Inhu. For he thought the scholarship and integrity of Kim Inhu(河西 金麟厚: 1510∼1560) who had been neglected even in Honam were something that moved beyond the regional boundary. Kim Wonhaeng also encouraged the interests of Honam in Kim Inhu by mentioning Kim Inhu's Munmyochongsa discussion. Such influence of Kim Wonhaeng enabled the Honam man Hwang Yunsŏk to inherit the tradition of the Nak school as well as to reestablish the Honam tradition represented by Kim Inhu. Due to his profound affection and efforts for his regional culture, Hwang Yunsŏk came to leave an unusual legacy in Honam Confucianism until today.
