Abstract
Yamaga Soko, along with Ito Jinsai and Okyu Sorai, is one of the three most important people in School Pursuing Old Disciplines, and also the first to advocate the School. In this article, I tried to look at a part of his Confucian Thought through his interpretation of The Great Learning. He was touched by Neo Confucianism before age 40, but he took a critical stance on Neo Confucianism after establishing his own Sacred Discipline in the mid-forties. Therefore, in this article, I tried to reveal the characteristics of Soko's interpretation of The Great Learning through comparison with Zhu Xi's interpretation. While explaining the name of The Great Learning, Zhu Xi explained it was a scholarship of a person over the age of 15, and Soko explained it was a great scholarship of saint. In addition, Soko emphasized the significance of chapter 1 of The Great Learning by emphasizing the importance of "one letter can not be changed and one letter can not be added or less" as an saint's teaching. As a result of the lack of contents about Knowledge through Study of Things, Zhu Xi rewrited it. Soko replied that there was nothing missing in The Great Learning and denied the necessity of Supplement on the Study of Things. He also explained that the whole of The Great Learning has contents about the Gainning Knowledge through Study of Things. In the first verse of Chapter 1, Brighten Virtue, Friendship with the People(Renewing the People) and Stay in Great Goodness are called three platforms. About Brighten virtue, Soko saw that it was not something the people could do, but what saint could do, and it was a demonstration of Samurai as a member of governors. In Ancient Great Learning the second platform was named Friendship with the People, Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi renamed as Renewing the People, and Soko first followed Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi's opinion. But later he asserted that Friendship with the People was correct. Zhu Xi saw Brighten Virtue and Friendship with the People as Stay in Great Goodness, but Soko clearly divided it into a third platform corresponding to the Gaining Knowedge through Study of Things. Soko's most cogent in interpretation of The Great Learnning was to shift his hermeneutical view from mind-centored interpretation of Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi to the Gaining Knowedge through Study of Things-centrated interpretation. Soko argued that the theory of mind of Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi was established under the influence of Taoim and Buddism, and that it was not an intrinsic meaning of a great scholarship of saint, but that the Gaining Knowledge through Study of Things was the truth taught by saints. Soko denied Being Perfectly Mastering of Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi and pointed out that if he did not look at the object but only his own inner face, he would be moved to Preserving one's mind and Cultivating one's mind and away from the original Gaining Knowledge through Study of Things. According to his own interpretation of the Gaining Knowledge through Study of Things, Soko argued that Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi's study the reason in mind was different from the Study of Things in The Great Learning. In the mid-forties, Soko built his own Sacred Discipline through the interpretation of The Punctuation of Four Books. Thus, in the interpretation of The Great Learning, he denied Cheng Zi and Zhu Xi's theory of mind and pursued the Gaining Knowledge through Study of Things in everyday life.
