일본적 시간론의 한 연구 –도겐과 니시다에서의 ‘영원의 지금’–

본 논문은 도겐과 니시다 기타로의 시간론을 통해 일본적 시간론의 한 갈래, 아마도 가장 중요한 갈래를 드러내고자 한다. 이 시간론의 핵심은 ‘영원의 지금(永遠の今)’ 개념에 있으며, 본 논문은 이 개념이 도겐과 니시다에 의해 어떤 방식으로 논의되는가를 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 도겐의 대표작인 『정법안장(正法眼藏)』, 「유시(有時)」에 나타난 그의 시간론의 핵심을 밝힌다. 도겐의 ‘이 지금[而今]’의 시간, 시절인연(時節因緣)의 시간을 크로노스와 아이온에 대한 들뢰즈의 구분을 참조해서 명료화할 것이다. 결론적으로 도겐의 시간은 흐르지 않는 시간, 사건의 시간, 반복되는 시간인 아이온의 시간에 근접함을 밝힐 것이다. 둘째, 니시다의 시간론은 도겐과 달리 크로노스의 차원과 아이온의 차원을 모두 포함함을, 그리고 크로노스를 수평축으로 하고 아이온을 수직축으로 하는 구도임을 베르그송과 바슐라르의 시간론을 참조하면서 밝혀낼 것이다. 셋째, 니시다의 성숙한 시간론인 ‘영원의 지금’ 개념을 밝히기 위해 우선 자각론을 중심으로 전개되던 니시다의 사유가 장소론을 거쳐 다시 절대무의 자각론으로 발전해 가는 과정을 짚어볼 것이다. 마지막으로, 니시다의 성숙한 사유에서 ‘영원의 지금’이 어떤 의미를 가지는지를, 앞에서 논한 수평축-수직축의 구도를 새롭게 음미하면서 논의할 것이다. 그리고 도겐과 니시다의 시간론에서의 차이를 다시 한 번 음미해 볼 것이다. 결론부에서는 이들의 시간론이 단지 두 사람의 시간론이 아니라 ‘일본적 시간론’의 핵심임을 지적하고자 한다.
Abstract
This article tries to reveal a fork of Japanese theories of time, maybe the most important one, elucidating the thoughts of Dogen and Nishida. The essential assertion of these theories of time exist in the concept of “Eternal Now”, and this article aims at clarifying the perspectives of Dogen and Nishida on this concept. For this, first, examining the essence of the theory of time of Dogen, which appeared in Existence-Time in his representative book Shobogenzo. This article examines his thought of time of “this now” and season’s encountering by referring the theory of time of Deleuze who distinguished two kinds of time: Chronos and Aion. Consequentially we can realize that the theory of time of Dogen is very near to the time of Aion which does not flow but repeats. Second, illuminating the theory of time of Nishida through two axes, horizontal and vertical. this article clarifies that his theory includes the Chronos as the horizontal time and the Aion as the vertical time, by referring the contrary theories of time of Bergson and Bachelard. Third, scrutinizing the process of Nishida’s thought, we can know that Nishida’s philosophy proceeded from the theory of reflection, mediating the theory of place, to that of the reflection of absolute nothingness. And this examination will give us the key to interpret the concept of the “Eternal Now” which is a refined thought of Nishida. Finally, re-discussing the plane of horizontal-vertical structure of NIshida’s theory of time, we can reveal the true implication of the concept of Eternal Now in his thought. and re-clarify the relation of Dogen and Nishida. And the final assertion of this article lies in that their theories of time are not just those of two philosophers, but the representative conception of Japanese time, not only in the contemporary Japanese thoughts but also in the Japanese culture in general.
