Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on the thoughts of Kim Changhyub, styled Nongam, who led the Dispute of Ho-Rak, with considerations of the thoughts both of Yi Hwang and Yi Yi. Kim Changhyub has merely been regarded as a synthetic theorist of the Four Seven Debate of two camps; Yi Hwang and Yi Yi. However, such a point of view to assess Kim's work could not make the context of his arguments apprehensive. The author of this essay examines the characteristics of his thoughts in light of the Four Seven Debate with a special attention to the concept of 'compromise' that he uses. The Discussion on the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions of Kim Changhyub is basically a work partly taking Yi Hwang as the main frame and critically rectify Yi Yi's theory. He tried to reassess the meaning of the Rise of Gi (gibal), keeping the originality of Li intact, and to establish the moral nature such as Four Beginnings without any effect from Gi. His discussions, therefore, seemingly discrepant, received a considerable size of criticism from Yi Yi's followers. However, his arguments are including Yi Yi's idea that practicing Li cannot be possible but for the function of Gi. Kim Changhyub actually revises Yi Yi's theory by connecting the Four Beginnings and the Seven Emotions and expands the realm of morality, and argues not to regard the good and the evil as the innate differences. Especially the issue of mind, which Kim unavoidably raises in the course of revising Yi Yi's theory, has a strong connection with the Dispute of Ho-Rak. He admitted the variety of beings according to the clearness or the cloudiness of Gi of each existence; but he rejected the effect of innate Gi to psychological phenomena. We can read here that he tried to enhance the possibility of human beings to expand their morality by admitting the emotional variableness.
