유교적 관점에서 본 노년초월의 함의

초록

이 연구는 유교의 노년관을 재조명하고 현대 노년담론에 새로운 지향점을 제안하고 있다. 특히 현대 노년초월론과 비교하여 유교적 노년관의 가치와 의의를 새롭게 조명한다. 이 논문에서는, 먼저 현대 노년학담론들을 비판적으로 검토한다. 그리고 현대 노년학 중 하나인 분리이론과 노년초월론에 주목하여 유교의 노년관과 비교지점을 모색한다. 둘째, 노년에 대한 유학자들의 인식을 살펴본다. 이 논문은, 유학자들이 노년 시기에 인식의 전환을 통해 자아와 세계를 새로운 시선으로 관조하고 자아 통합을 이루며 나아가 노년의 삶을 긍정하고 세속적 가치를 초월하는 양상을 고찰한다. 셋째, 유교적 노년초월의 중요한 특색을 살펴본다. 이 논문에 따르면, 유학자들은 노년에 인생의 궁극적 목적을 발견하고 그것을 향해 초월적 태도를 지향하는데, 그들의 초월은 일반적인 노년초월론과 달리 도덕 가치의 전체적 실현이라는 경지였다. 결론에서 이 논문에서는 유교의 노년초월론이 현대 노년담론에 기여할 바가 있을 것이라고 예상하면서 유교 노년담론의 현재적 적용 가능성을 기대한다.

Abstract

This paper re-examines the Confucian view of old age and proposes a new direction for contemporary aging discourse. In particular, this paper emphasizes the value and significance of the Confucian view of old age, especially compared to contemporary gerotranscendence theory. This paper first critically reviews contemporary aging discourse, explains the meaning of gerotranscendence theory, and seeks a comparison point with Confucian aging discourse. Second, it examines Confucian scholars' perceptions of old age. This paper searches the aspects that Confucian scholars contemplated the relation between the self and the world, achieved self-integrity, discovered the benefits of old age, and enjoyed lives in old age through a change in perception in their old age. Third, it examines the important characteristics of gerotranscendental in Confucianism. According to it, Confucian scholars discover the ultimate purpose of life in their old age and aim for a transcendental attitude toward it, and their gerotranscendence was the realization of moral values. In conclusion, this paper anticipates that Confucian gerotranscendence may contribute to modern old age discourse, and expects the current availability of Confucian aging discourse.
