Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the features of the Cambodian family, based on the concept of both cognatic kinship and matrifocality, which are non-lineal. The respondents in our sample were selected with non-probability sampling. The sample for the study was drawn from respondents living in Phnom Penh and several rural provinces in Cambodia. The total sample size was 700 respondents. The findings are as follows. First, many respondents agreed to one of important characteristics of familism, that is, the priority of family interests. However, they stated that both parents-children relationship and the husband-wife relationship are equally important. Interestingly, they respond that the support of the elderly parents is more important than the care of children. Second, the bonds related to the female family members tend to be stronger than the bonds related to the male family members. Third, mother’s networks tend to work more actively than father’s network. Women have the responsibility of controlling the family budget and educating the socialization of their children. However, family members respect both mother and father equally, due to the gender ideology in the Buddhism. In Buddhism, men are more likely to be considered a source of wisdom while women’s economic activities are encouraged.
