초록
This article analyzes the commemoration of Vietnam’s naval battles (Battle of the Paracel Islands in 1974; Johnson South Reef Skirmish of 1988) with China as an example of how the Vietnamese “memory machine” has tried to keep tight control of its past, and of how this commemorative policy has witnessed significant changes in the last fifteen years – mainly due to China’s more assertive stance in the South China Sea. The article will show the reader how Vietnam has stepped up its commemoration of its sea battles with China since the mid-2010s. The article is based on visits to relevant museums, and monuments, and an analysis of articles and documentaries in Vietnamese state media.
Abstract

The article will show the reader how Vietnam has stepped up its commemoration of its sea battles with China since the mid-2010s. The article is based on visits to relevant museums, and monuments, and an analysis of articles and documentaries in Vietnamese state media.
