Abstract

In environmental philosophy, ecological approaches are generally based on the holism in that an ecosystem is considered as an organism, and have somewhat of mystical nature. Such approaches have difficulty in providing a practical ideology to prevent the prefix of “eco-" from being accompanied with the activities that hinder sustainable development. Because the concepts of ecology and ecosystem are equivocal, it is difficult to define them. To tell the limitations of the ecological approaches, however, I investigated their definitions in ecological literature. I define ecology as the study of the interactions among organisms and their environments in the course of evolution, and do ecosystem as the system in that its organisms adapt dynamically to its everlastingly changing abiotic environment while they interact one another. In the context of the definitions, it is difficult for the ecological approaches to encourage people in practical environmental activities for lack of concreteness and dynamics. Ecological genetics integrates population genetics into ecology to explore evolution. It provides an approach to explore the dynamics of ecosystems while explaining the holistic nature of ecosystems and the individualistic nature of individuals and genes. Thus I suggest the ecological genetic approach as a new approach, which is incorporated into the existing ecological approaches and includes the concreteness and dynamics, to promote practical environmental activities.
