[연구목적] 본 연구의 목적은 재무제표 자료를 이용하여 사립대학의 특성과 재정건전성의 관련성을 분석하는 것이다. 학령인구의 감소와 수도권 대학에 수험생이 집중하는 현상으로 인해 상당수의 지방사립대학이 재정적 위기에 처해 있다. 이에 대학의 특성과 재정건전성의 관계를 분석하여 재정적 악화 원인을 확인하고자 하였다. [연구방법] 분석을 위해 2018년에서 2022년까지 공시된 재무제표와 학생 수, 1인당 교육비와 등록금 자료를 이용하였다. 사립대학의 지역, 규모 및 재정적 특성을 확인하고 이러한 특성과 재정건전성의 관련성을 실증 분석하였다. [연구결과] 첫째, 수도권에 소재하는 대학의 재정건전성이 높고, 재학생 수가 많을수록 재정건전성이 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 비등록금 의존율이 높은 대학이 그렇지 않은 대학들에 비해 재정건전성이 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 임의적립금이 많은 대학일수록 재정건전성이 양호한 것으로 나타났다. [연구의 시사점] 중소규모 지방대학의 지속가능성을 높이기 위한 대학 간 통합, 지방대학에 대한 재정지원 사업 등 정부 정책을 뒷받침하는 실증적인 근거를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 재정건전성을 개선하기 위한 대학의 경영정책 수립에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
[Purpose]The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the characteristics of private universities and their financial soundness using financial statement data. Due to the decline in the school－age population and the concentration of applicants in metropolitan universities, many regional private universities are facing financial crises. Therefore, this study aims to identify the causes of financial deterioration by analyzing the relationship between university characteristics and financial soundness. [Methodology] For the analysis, financial statements, student numbers, per capita education expenses, and tuition data disclosed from 2018 to 2022 were used. The regional, size, and financial characteristics of private universities were identified, and the relationship between these characteristics and financial soundness was empirically analyzed. [Findings] First, universities located in metropolitan areas showed higher financial soundness, and the greater the number of enrolled students, the better the financial soundness. Second, universities with a high dependence on non－tuition revenue showed better financial soundness compared to those that did not. Third, universities with higher discretionary reserves demonstrated better financial soundness. [Implications] This study provides empirical evidence supporting government policies such as the integration of small and medium－sized regional universities and financial support projects for regional universities to enhance their sustainability. Additionally, it can contribute to the establishment of management policies for universities aimed at improving financial soundness.
