Abstract
In all ages and countries, humans would want to get information from books for better lives. They also have the desire to possess books. So they have put some possession marks on their books. Sometimes, people write on the book when and how they came to possess them and affix book ownership stamps in which their names and pen names are engraved. This study reviewed the book collection of Song Byeongha (宋炳夏, 1646~1697) who was the second grandson of Dongchundang (同春堂) Song Jungil (宋浚吉, 1606~1672) and tried to examine how the library was built, through the book ownership stamps sealed on those books. Song Byeongha family has 304 books/1,500volumes of old books at present. 110books/718volumes have book ownership stamps in them. The stamps were sealed in one third of books and half of volumes. 18 persons used 57 kinds of stamps. 12 persons were the offsprings of Dongchundang Song Jungil, belonging to Eunjin Song family, while 6 persons were other families familiar with the Song family. The book collection of Song family was started from Song Jungil, the excellent book collector and had built through six generations from Song Byeongha (second grandson of Song Jungil) to Song Yowha (宋堯和, 1682-1764), Song Ikheum (宋益欽, 1708-1757), Song Giyeon (宋起淵, 1727-1749), Song Gyelae (宋啓來, 1748-1799) and Song Gyuhee (宋奎熙, 1769-1819) by exhaustive book care. Song Jungil made his own book list, GajangSeojeokbu (家藏書籍簿) and checked out more than one thousand books regularly. Song Yowha & Song Ikheum, the father and son managed the book collection of their study, Osukjae (寤宿齋). Song Ikheum used Osukjae as his pen name. As Song Yowha had been for a long time in government service and Song Ikheum could not enter in government service in his youth, Song Ikheum had cared for the study and books nearly for 30 years. It contributed much to the management and preservation of Song family's library. Song Ikheum and his second cousins Song Myeongheum (宋明欽, 1705-1768) and Song Munheum (宋文欽, 1710-1752) were called 'three huem (三欽)'. They had exchanged their emotions, learning and arts each other, greatly affecting each other. Their interchanges can be found clearly in book exchange. Owing to their book exchanges, Song Myeongheum family‘s books are left in Song Ikheum’s library. Many books of Song Byeongmun (宋炳文) family, eldest grandson of Song Jungil, have been kept in Song Byeongha family, the second grandson. It can be understood easily through Song Byeongmun‘s broken family line. Seven generations from Song Byeongmun had suffered brief life span and heirless. Three offsprings of Song Byeongha were adopted to Song Byeongmun family to carry on family line. Seven books have the book ownership stamps of other families than Song. The owners were the key companions of Eunjin Song family in Noron (老論) party having very close relations with Song family by marriage and academic line. Therefore, they exchanged books with Song family and some books came to left in Song's library. This study looked into the lives and books of Song family through the 57 book ownership stamps of 18 persons. This study shows how the persons were related in family line, adoption, interchange, marriage, academy line and others through a spectrum of book collection.
