Tertiarization and Competitiveness of Services in Gangwon-do

Abstract
This article analyzes the tertiarization in Gangwon-do using data taken from Korea National Statistical Office. First, service sector has become the most important sector in terms of output and employment in Ganwon-do. Its share was more than 60% of the total value added and employment in 2006. Second, Ganwon-do is located in Baumol’s world consisting of stagnant services such as hotels and restaurants. Third, Gangwon-do needs to upgrade the above stagnant sectors through specialization and making larger in size. Gangwon-do might thus strategically develop business services which would lead to Oulton’s world.
