Abstract
Low cost carrier(LCC) has been one of the salient topics for decades in aviation industry. LCC is the model of airline operational types which is characterized with the usage of same aircraft type, point-point operation, single class seat and others. On the basis of this model, LCCs could create new values for customers and enabled to expand their market shares rapidly in the world. However, as their network sizes grew, they have tried to change their models in various ways. These changes or evolutions of LCCs are understood as inevitable choice to survive under tough competitions among other airlines including full service network carriers(FSNCs), regional carriers and charters. The model evolutions of LCCs have taken places from service areas like on-flight services to many others areas such as fare bundling. Air ticket fares of LCCs are sometimes claimed differently by class or/and by option which customers can choose when they buy tickets. Also in the past most LCCs operated mainly at secondary airports where airport charges were relatively cheap, while lately some LCCs are likely to move their home bases into primary airports where they enable attract more passengers despite expensive airport charges. Furthermore some LCCs constructed enormous flight networks and conducted hub operations like FSNCs. LCCs are probable to evolve their models from archetype to hybrids of which LCCs have some of similar characteristics of FSNCs. In this paper, empirical researches about LCCs with multiple regression analysis are undertaken to understand the characteristics of evolved LCC models from a comprehensive perspective. Representative LCCs, of which passengers are over 5 millions in 2014, in the world are selected, and they are divided and grouped by model type evolved from archetypical LCCs; archetype LCCs, hub operation LCCs and service differentiated LCCs. Regression analyses are carried out with independent variables, which are considered as core factors to have impacts on the route characteristics of LCCs such as route distance, populations, hub airport effect, monopoly effect, etc, and a dependent variable as the market share ratio of the LCCs. With these analyses to identify the characteristics of evolved LCCs by type and by region, this paper aims at evaluating the directions of the evolution and the development of LCCs.
