Abstract
This paper attempts to investigate the changes of regional power structure according to May Movements effect. The assumptions of this paper are as follows; First, May Movements lead to democratization of regional power structure. The characteristics of that changes are increasement of participation politics and institutionalization of members in social movement organizations. Second, The dominant discourse of Gwang-Ju & Chonnam province at the present time is not democratization, but growth ideology. The result of research present that the regional power structure of Gwang-Ju & Chonnam province have changed severely and broadly after 1980 than any other places in Korea. And it is the effect of May Uprising and May Movements. Especially May Movements caused the development of social movement organizations quantitatively as well as qualitatively, and the transformation of regional decision-making structure. Above all, some members of regional power structure have changed through May movements. However the changes of members in the regional power structure is, the consequence of democratization on the one hand, re-production of regional power structure on the other hand. Major constituent members of regional power structure have not changed. The dominant discourse of Gwang-Ju & Chonnam province is the same contents as twenty five years ago. So, May Uprising and May Movements endangered regional power structure, but regional power structure have reproduced itself by recruiting members of social movements organizations.
