The holding company as a new corporate governance has been widely adopted by Korean companies. The establishment of the holding company was allowed by the Government in February 1999 and, since then, a total of 127 legally-acknowledged holding companies have appeared until September 2010. In particular, large business groups were very interested in the new governance system with the result that a total of 19 major groups have been transformed into fully-fledged holding company systems, while 6 groups preferred partial holding company systems. This paper explores in what ways these 26 major business groups have established their own holding company systems and what sorts of features the 32 holding companies belonging to the 26 groups have. Also, the paper examines the recent holding company systems of LG and SK, which were the 3rd and 4th largest business groups as of April 2010.
