Abstract
As firms increasingly meet one another in multiple markets, these firms are more likely to engage in tacit collusion and decrease competition. Empirical findings on multimarket contact in multiple industries have consistently reported that it has a negative linear impact or inverted-U shaped impact on competition. Even though the findings are consistent, it is not yet clear whether the magnitude of the impact is similar across the industries. We focus on the characteristics of the airline industry and meta-analyzed whether the reported relationship is much stronger in the airline industry in comparison with the other industries. We argue that two conditions are critical in determining the impact of multimarket contact: (1) the existence of strategic substitution effect between neighboring markets; and (2) the existence of cross-market cost structure differences among firms. We find virtually no strategic substitution effect but cross-market cost structure differences among firms in the airline industry, both of which are important conditions for the workings of mutual forbearance hypothesis. Thus, we hypothesized that the reported impact is much stronger in the airline industry and meta-analyzed studies that either reported a linear relationship or found an inverted-U shaped relationship. The results confirmed both a negative linear relationship and an inverted-U shaped relationship as reported by the included studies. And we found support for the moderating effect of the airline industry in the quadratic relationship, but not in the linear relationship. For the sake of robustness, permutation test produced the same result, albeit with lower statistical significance. Egger’s test showed that small-study effects may exist but further analysis suggested that this could be due to between-study heterogeneity rather than publication bias. We conclude with some theoretical and managerial implications. First, the results suggest that we need to understand the characteristics of the market and the types of competition to better understand why there are linear or quadratic relationships in the first place. And researchers may be better off controlling for strategic substitution effect since almost all the other industries that have studied multimarket contact are in some sense subject to strategic substitution effect. Or at least readers are advised to exercise some extra caution in interpreting the results when strategic substitution effect is present. This is especially true for such industries that are characterized with differentiated products like the automobile industry. And we also argue that this might be also true for the airline industry since all the studies on this industry have only tested direct city-pair markets without considering indirect routes. In addition, our results suggest that researchers need to pay more attention to the fit among the unit-of- analysis, market characteristics, and the types of competition. The same type of competition may have different meaning and significance dependent on industries or markets, and different units-of-analysis in conjunction with the same type of competition end up produce different results. So researchers are encouraged to elaborate the fit among these elements. Finally, the argument of cross-market cost structure differences may provide an explanation for some recent findings about the lack of multimarket contact effect when low-cost carriers are in operation in the market and the strong existence of multimarket contact effect in airline routes with high sales revenues.
