초록

In this paper, we attempt to examine the different effects on the conditions and determinants of wage workers' job instability by regions in Korea. We employ two survival analysis techniques: the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Cox's proportional hazard model. For this, we used the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) waves 1 through 12 and work history data of wave 12. Our results show that the features of probability of unemployment are very different in regions and there is a difference in the effects of workers' specific and labor market characteristics on the unemployment risk by regions as well. It is also confirmed that workers of younger ages, workers with low level education, workers in smaller enterprises, and workers as temporary employees have higher effects on the unemployment risk, while the middle aged workers with high level of education, workers in larger enterprises with a labor union, workers in the construction, producer and social service industries, and workers in a regular position have lower effects. The various contributions of individual and labor market characteristics to explain the difference of unemployment risk by regions might be caused by the regional industrial and labor market structures. These findings imply that the national policy must target for regional specificity, and should pay more attention to ensuring the job stability against unemployment risks in each region.

Abstract

In this paper, we attempt to examine the different effects on the conditions and determinants of wage workers' job instability by regions in Korea.
