한국학중앙연구원 고문서 사업의 핵심 영역은 크게 4개 부분으로 나누어진다. 첫째, 조사․수집 분야이다. 고문서의 조사는 반드시 원본 소장처에 대한 현장조사를 원칙으로 한다. 현장조사는 조사자가 문헌 및 탐문을 통해 고문서에 대한 정보를 획득한 뒤 실시하며, 이를 위해 인적 네트워크를 구축하고 있다. 고문서 소장자 및 향토문화 관계자 협의회가 그것이다. 둘째, 정리 영역으로서, 목록화(DB구축) 및 촬영 그리고 편집․출판, 디지털 가공 부분이다. 셋째, 기초적 연구 부분이다. 여기서 기초적 연구란 초서(草書) 자료의 정서(탈초), 그리고 작성연도, 발급자, 수급자 파악 등 고문서 이해를 위한 기초적 연구를 말한다. 넷째, 고문서의 보존 부분이다. 한국학중앙연구원은 고문서 원본을 일정기간 대여하여 정리하기 때문에 정리 이전에 보존 처리가 필수적이다. 보존처리는 전문가를 위촉하여 과학적 보존처리 시스템을 도입해 고문헌의 부식 방지, 또는 취급과정에서의 파손 방지를 최우선 과제로 하고 있다. 또 한편으로는 도난과 망실 방지를 위해 고문서 기탁(寄託) 및 기증(寄贈)제도를 운영하고 있다. 기증 기탁제도는 영구보존이라는 측면에서 국가적 의미가 부여되어 이를 전문적으로 보관하고 관리하는 시설을 마련하게 되었다. 2007년도부터 추진되는 장서각의 신축도 이러한 기증 기탁 고문서의 보관 관리 차원에서 계획된 것이다. 정리문제에서 가장 문제되는 점은 두 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 먼저 고전적의 표준화 문제이다. 국내 어느 기관을 막론하고 고문서 분류체계 등 이론적 틀을 가지고 정리하는 기관은 드물다. 따라서 국내 뿐 아니라 전 세계적으로 통용될 수 있는 고문서 정리에 표준화 방안이 요구된다. 두 번째, 정리 인력의 문제로서, 특히 고문서를 정리하는 데는 수준 높은 전문가가 요구된다. 정리자는 ① 고문서 및 한문 해독능력 ② 초서 해독능력 ③ 문서 감정능력 등의 조건을 겸비하여야 한다.
Abstract
The project for Korean historical manuscript in the Academy of Korean Studies is broadly fallen into the four parts as follows. First, to collect and research the old documents and books. The fundamental fact is to research old documents in the original place preserving them. The field examination is an opportunity to provide the researcher the information for manuscripts by continuing personal networks and seminars on local culture for document collectors and related experts. Secondly, to database valuable documents including photographing, editing, publishing, and digitalizing document images. Thirdly, to study basic elements to understand characteristics of Korean historical manuscripts. In particular, it means several stages including translation of Sino-Korean cursive script into readable versions, dating, and processing of issuing the document. Finally, to manage and preserve old archives. The Academy has a special team for collecting privately-owned ancient documents in danger of loss or destruction. To meet the needs of preservation, the Academy invites conservatism experts who are in charge of checking the preservation state and corrosion of old papers, and preventing the future physically demolition. The Academy also encourages collectors to entrust the documents to protect them from depletion by thief and destruction by water or fire. This system will offer the everlasting preservation under the government administration of archives, in accordance with reconstructing Jangseo-gak Loyal Library, Academy of Korean Studies, since 2007. For this project. it is essential to erudite theoretical guidelines of the Project of Standardization for Classifying Korean Historical Manuscripts, as well as to recruit highly-qualified researchers to read historical documents in cursive script, judging the authenticity of them.
