Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status and that of the Jeollabuk-do Science Museum based on the recent academic and policy discussions on the domestic science museum and to suggest ways to continuously develop the Jeollabuk-do Science Museum. Currently, two national science museums and seven public science museums are established and operated in Jeollabuk-do, all of which are small professional and themed science museums. By utilizing local characteristics, scientific museums in the province hold scientific events every year in connection with various local festivals and encourage local residents to participate in science and culture. However, due to the lack of linkage among science museums, most events are run independently and are being conducted on a one-time basis. This is a common limitation of local science museums, but especially Jeollabuk-do is lack of large-scale science museums that will serve as base science one. With the recent development of science and technology, the demand for science and culture has increased significantly, and the roles and functions of science are changing and expanding. Accordingly, the government is promoting projects to build a medium-sized national science museum and improve exhibitions of small local science museums to foster local science museums. Here, we will understand the current status of nine science museums operated in Jeollabuk-do and review the recent government-promoted science museum policies. Based on this, we will propose the necessity of a medium-sized or larger scale science museum as a way to develop the Jeollabuk-do Science Museum, and further consider the nature of the regional base science museum necessary for Jeollabuk-do.
