A Comparative Analysis of Online English Dictionaries for Children

This paper explores effective ways of teaching and learning vocabulary through online dictionaries for children. In Korea, the number of English learning websites has recently increased, so has the number of online children’s dictionaries. The absence of representative children’s dictionaries from established publishers online, however, has led learners and teachers to hesitate to use these existing dictionaries. For this study, online children’s dictionaries are selected based on criteria and analyzed with thorough assessment tools for their potential application. Online children’s dictionaries usually include texts, pictures, and native speakers’ pronunciation to facilitate learners’ vocabulary retention. Moreover, these features reinforce vocabulary learning through useful exercises and games with direct responses. The combined functions of a reference to words and a vocabulary learning tool allow these dictionaries to be effective for developing learners’ vocabulary knowledge.
