본 연구는 조선후기 영광 지역에 세거한 전주이씨 병사공파 종가의 한 인물인 사춘헌(四春軒) 이중관(李重觀, 1674∼1773)의 생애와 관직활동을 현전하는 종가 자료와 관찬 사료 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 이중관은 전주이씨 효령대군의 12세손으로, 어려서부터 학문에 뛰어나 이현⋅조상우⋅조인수에게 수학하였다. 또한 친인척인 서씨 가문과의 교유를 통해 자연스럽게 소론의 학맥을 따르게 되었으며, 성균관 시절에는 동료 유생들과 학문적 교류를 이어갔다. 사마시와 문과에 잇달아 합격한 뒤 약 13년간 관직에 봉직하면서 언관과 승지를 거쳐 안변부사, 경주부윤, 진주목사 등 외관직을 역임하였다. 그는 강직한 성품과 개혁적 행정으로 명성을 얻었으며, 정치적으로는 소론 내 온건파로서 경종을 보호하고 노론을 견제하는 동시에 왕세제 연잉군도 함께 지키고자 하였다. 이러한 입장은 급진 소론의 반발을 불러 탄핵당하는 원인이 되었으나, 영조 즉위 이후 탕평정책 속에서 다시 중용되었다. 본 논문은 이중관의 학문적 성장, 정치적 입장, 관직 활동을 고찰함으로써 그가 조선 후기 정치사에서 차지하는 위상을 규명한 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores the life and official career of Yi Jung-gwan (李重觀, 1674–1773), a member of the Jeonju Yi clan’s Byeongsa-gong branch who resided in Yeonggwang during the late Joseon Dynasty. Based on extant historical documents, diaries, and official records, the research focuses on his governmental service between 1719, when he passed the state examination, and 1732, the year of his death. Despite the relatively short period of 13 years, Yi served under three different kings and held numerous official posts. Known for his upright and principled character, he was frequently appointed to positions as a censor (eongwan, 言官), boldly offering direct counsel to the king. At the same time, he was a caring and devoted local administrator who strived to alleviate the suffering of the people. During the politically turbulent early 18th century marked by conflict between the Noron and Soron factions, Yi represented the Soron viewpoint. Nevertheless, King Yeongjo, despite being politically opposed to Yi, recognized his abilities and continued to appoint him to key positions. Yi Jung-gwan’s career thus serves as an important example of Yeongjo’s policy of impartiality (Tangpyeong) in action.
