Abstract
This article examines the characteristics and historical significance of the Imperial Edict issued in 1902 when Jo Byeong-se was granted a Sa Gwejang(賜几杖, a traditional Eastern system in which a cane and chair are bestowed to high-ranking officials over the age of 70 who have rendered distinguished service to the state when they request retirement, as a gesture to dissuade them from stepping down). The Sa Gwejang Edict received by Jo Byeong-se is one of only three such documents issued during the Korean Empire period and was delivered in the most authoritative format of the empire’s official documents, the Joseo(詔書). When analzying the division of responsibilities and ceremonial procedures, the Sa Gwejang ritual of the Korean Empire mirros that of the Joseon Dynasty, with the only differences arising from the shift to an imperial system. It has also been confirmed that the Sa Gwejang Joseo matches the Sa Gwejang Gyoseo(敎書, The most authoritative form of document bestowed by the king during the Joseon Dynasty) in its formal characteristics and the use of characters. This document, as a continuation of the traditions from the Joseon Dynasty, holds significant importance in the historical context of Korean official documents.
