Abstract

This paper examines the activities of Prince Neungchang(綾昌君) Yi Suk(1691–1768), a royal relative who served as Director of the Bureau of Royal Genealogy and managed the Seonwongak during the late 18th century. Prince Neungchang, a fourth-generation descendant of King Seonjo, renovated the desk of the Seonwongak at the Bureau of Royal Genealogy in 1755 and organized the archived documents according to hierarchical order, compiling the Eulhae Rejeong Boncheong Hyeongjian(乙亥釐正本廳形止案). Of particular note in this inventory is the record of the memoranda of the nine illustrious ancestoors(列聖九朝單子) that were enshrined in 1760. Through this documentation, the study elucidates the background behind the discrepancies between information described in extant records and historical facts. In 1760, Prince Neungchang relocated the Seonwongak of the Bureau of Royal Genealogy to the northwest of the main hall. He compiled the Wangja Inseongun Hyomin-gong Haengnok(王子仁城君孝愍公行錄) by collecting biographical accounts and epitaphs of his grandfather and father from his royal lineage. After serving as an envoy for the enshrinement ceremonies at the archives of Mount Taebaek, Mount Jeoksang, and Mount Odae, Prince Neungchang had the Wangja Inseongun Hyomin-gong Haengnok enshrined in the Seonwongak. The royal records of the Bureau of Royal Genealogy, which had been destroyed during the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin waeran), began to be reorganized by Prince Uichang(義昌君) Yi Gwang, the eighth son of King Seonjo. From the 17th century onward, royal relatives who served as Directors of the Bureau of Royal Genealogy published the Yeolseong Eoje(Collected Royal Compositions), Yeolseong Eopil(Collected Royal Calligraphy), and Seonwon Gyeebo Giryak(Brief Records of Royal Genealogy). Prince Neungchang Yi Suk continued the work of his predecessors in organizing royal records and managing the Seonwongak as the royal archive. These activities by royal relatives contributed to establishing royal court culture in the later Joseon period while assisting the monarch.
