Abstract

This study examines the origin, historical transformation, and cultural significance of p’yo-mun(表文, formal memorials) within the broader category of ju-ui-ryu documents(奏議類文書) in China, and their adaptation and reinterpretation in Korea. Originating as official upward documents through which ministers conveyed gratitude, petitions, or remonstrations to the emperor, p’yo-mun became institutionalized during the Han dynasty as both a literary and political medium. By the Tang and Song periods, it had evolved into a ritualized text that repeatedly performed imperial authority, and by the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it had largely lost its administrative function, surviving instead as a symbolic representation of hierarchical order. In Korea, p’yo-mun was introduced during the Three Kingdoms period as a central diplomatic instrument within the tributary system. Throughout the Goryeo dynasty, it was systematized and stylistically transformed, merging the Confucian literary conventions of Tang–Song with indigenous emotional and political inflections. During the Joseon dynasty, the form bifurcated into p’yo (表) for foreign diplomacy and jeon(箋) for internal royal communication, institutionalizing a dual textual system that articulated political legitimacy and moral hierarchy within the state. Ultimately, p’yo-mun in Korea functioned not as a mere imitation of Chinese prototypes but as a performative text that embedded self-determination within ritualized submission. By inscribing political autonomy into the very language of deference, Korea transformed a symbol of subordination into a medium of sovereign expression. This study therefore interprets p’yo-mun as a linguistic apparatus where authority and identity, ritual and autonomy, converge—an archetype of Korean political language that recontextualized the imperial idiom into its own discourse of dignity and statehood.
