최근 한국기업들은 내수시장에서의 성장률 정체를 극복하기 위해 보다 다양한 국가들로 영업활동을 확장하여 국제시장으로 활발히 진출하고 있다. 제한적인 국내시장만으로는 성장에 한계가 있기 때문에 많은 기업들이 해외로 진출하여 국제다각화를 추진하고 있으며, 새롭게 진출한시장에서 비교우위를 확보하기 위하여 가치 창출 활동에 적극 참여하고 있다. 이러한 상황에서, 국제적 다각화가 새로운 시장에서의 영업활동을 성공적으로 추진하기 위해 기업 내 연구개발 활동을 더욱 증진시킬지를 살펴보는 것은 의미 있는 실증적 연구가 될 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 개별기업의 국제적 다각화가 기업 내의 연구개발비 지출에 어떠한 영향을미치는지를 살펴보는데 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는, 개별기업의 국제다각화수준을 해외매출비중과 해외자산비중, 그리고 해외매출액의 증가율로 측정하고, 당기총매출액에서 연구개발비가 차지하는 비중을 연구개발집중도의 대용치로 사용한 후, 기업의 연구개발집중도에 영향을 미치는일련의 통제변수들과 함께 포함하여 회귀분석하였다. 2001년부터 2013년까지 우리나라 유가증권시장과 코스닥시장에 상장된 기업들 중 4,150개의 기업/연 자료를 가지고 실증분석 한 결과, 기업의 국제다각화 수준이 클수록 연구개발비의 집중도 또한 증가한 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 연구개발지출의 수준을 결정하는 기업의 전략, 정책, 특성 및 지배구조에 대한 이해를 높이고, 기업의 다각화 전략이나 다국적기업의 연구개발비 지출에 관심을가지고 있는 학계나 실무계, 그리고 정부의 기관에도 유익한 정보를 제공해 줄 것이다.
Abstract
Recently, many Korean firms expand their business internationally because of the limited domestic market demand and growth. Once they start operating in international markets, they makes lots of efforts to build competitive advantages through product diversification and differentiation. In this situation, we need to examine if the firm's international diversification coming along with product diversification and differentiation will enhance the firm's R&D activities or they will reduce their R&D expenditures due to the increased risks and costs in new markets. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether firms with high level of international diversification also increase their R&D expenditures or not. Using a sample of 4,150 firm-year observations during the year 2001 to 2013 period, I find that there is a positive relationship between firms' international diversification and R&D intensity. This implies that the firms with more international diversification have experienced the significant increase in their R&D expenditures. This paper is a first attempt to explore the functional relationship between the level of international diversification and R&D costs. The results of this study have implications for managers in multinational companies, government, standard setters, and researchers in enhancing their understanding of international diversification strategy and R&D expenditures of multinational firms.
