고종대 왕세자 입학례(⼊學禮)의 시행과 의의

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the practice and meaning of the crown prince's admission ceremony in 1882 (Gojong 19). The entrance ceremony was a ritual in which the crown prince or the crown grandson went to Sungkyunkwan[成均館] and paid homage to the Confucian temple and asked for learning from the doctor as a student. It was a rite of passage for the crown prince from the early Joseon period. The entrance ceremony of the crown prince in 1882 was devised as a measure to overcome the domestic and foreign turmoil at that time. The Joseon royal family performed rituals to stabilize the political situation when they faced a national crisis, and Gojong tried to establish the national foundation by entrusting the rite of passage of the crown prince. The entrance ceremony of the crown prince was the first step of the rite of passage after the Royal Investiture ceremony. The entrance ceremony performed in the late Joseon period changed into a more elevated form of ceremony than the early Joseon period, with the addition of the rites of Goyuje[告由], Jinha[進賀], and Bansa[頒赦]. The entrance ceremony of the early Joseon period was carried out under the application of the entrance ceremony and the ideology of respect. However, as the interest in the king’s succession increased due to the prominent Master king[君師] of the Yeong-Jeongjo era in the late Joseon period, the entrance ceremony of paying homage to the Confucian temple became a politically important ritual. In the entrance ceremony of the crown prince in 1882, Gojong added Gyeongmogung[景慕宮] as the subject of the pre-announcement ceremony to secure the legitimacy of the succession of the throne through bloodline supplementation, and proceeded with the rite of the Soksuwi[束脩儀], in which the doctor first bowed to the crown prince and the crown prince returned the bow, transforming the relationship between the crown prince and the doctor, which was a teacher-student relationship, into a military-civilian relationship.
