Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the differences between the public perception of the Eosa (royal inspector) and the actual historical reality of the Eosa, and to investigate the significance of these differences. While most people think of a secret royal inspector (Amhaengeosa) when they hear the word "Eosa," the perception of the secret royal inspector is more influenced by the depiction of Eosa in classical novels than by historical facts. Therefore, the origins of such fictional representations were explored through works believed to have been written in the latter half of the 17th century, such as Wolbonggi and Sohyeonseongnok. Furthermore, the study analyzed the figure of the secret inspector as portrayed in two works featuring Yi Mongryong and Park Munsu, who are iconic secret royal inspectors, namely Chunhyangjeon and Parkmoonsujeon. Yi Mongryong in Chunhyangjeon is depicted as a romantic figure, using his own power for love, representing the image of an idealistic young scholar. Park Munsu in Parkmoonsujeon, on the other hand, takes immediate action by punishing wrongdoers directly in an extralegal manner, rather than relying on law or official authority, embodying the image of a prompt problem-solver. Historically, the secret royal inspector was constrained by legal and institutional limitations. However, the inspector depicted in classical novels fundamentally differs in that he realizes justice in accordance with the public's hopes. The persistence of this fictional image of the inspector to the present day can be attributed to the belief that, just as in the past, justice is still not fully realized in society today.
