Abstract

Based on my experience of teaching “Love, Sexuality, and English Literature” in the era of the pandemic, this article discusses how student-oriented discussions of gender-related issues, to which the twenty-first-century Korean undergraduates may react sensitively, could be carried out effectively online in a liberal arts elective. In order to implement problem-posing education, which can foster critical literacy, I encouraged both male and female students to honestly share their feelings and thoughts about dating and marriage in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre albeit via online. Given both the online learning environment and the ongoing gender conflict in Korea, it was not easy to create a safe online space where every student could speak comfortably about how the women writers respond to the gender issues of their time in their fiction. In order to help students better adjust to the student-centered learning environment online, I used both real-time and bulletin board discussions and weighed up their pros and cons, respectively. I suggest that the bulletin board discussion was more effective than the real-time one. The bulletin board one gave students sufficient time not only to refine their discussion manner but also to read their peer’s postings and to rethink their initial thoughts about gender and literature. Admittedly, however, the bulletin board discussion could make students self-conscious and thus pay too much attention to the opinion of others. I leave this as a task for future studies on liberal arts education.
