본 논문은 이주민의 친구 및 친지 방문(Visiting Friends and Relatives, VFR) 호스팅이 이주 지역의 장소감 형성 과정에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 연구하였다. 이주민이 이주 국가와 지역에서 형성하는 장소감에 집중하였으며, 이와 더불어 VFR 관광호스팅을 통해서 형성되는 장소감을 탐구하였다. 베트남 호찌민에 거주 중인 한인을 연구 대상으로 선정하였으며, 각 이주민 호스트의 장소감을 중심으로 친구 및 친지 방문 호스팅에 따른 감정 및 경험을 살펴보기 위해 개별 심층 인터뷰를 수행하였다. 연구 결과는 다음의 두 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 시공간적 요인과 동질감과 같은감정, 편리함과 같은 경험이 이주민의 장소감 형성에 영향을 미친다. 둘째, VFR 관광 호스팅을 통한 장소감 형성은 공간, 감정, 경험의 키워드로 정리할 수 있다. 이주민은 호스팅을 위해 의도적으로 다양한 공간에 대한 정보를 습득하고 이는 새로운공간 인식으로 이어지며, 이주민들의 소비 및 여가 공간의 확장의 계기가 된다. VFR 관광객을 통해 느낀 ‘집’과 ‘멀리’, 이주 지역에 대한 애착과 자부심과 같은 감정적 부분 또한 이주민의 장소감 형성에 영향을 미친다. 그리고 VFR 관광 호스팅을통한 이주 지역에 대한 긍정적 기억 형성, 일상 공간에 대한 새로운 경험, 거주 지역에 대한 새로운 관점과 같은 경험들 역시 이주민의 장소감 형성에 영향을 미친다. 본 연구는 기존 이주민 연구에서 개별적인 키워드로 다뤄지던 이주민의 장소감과VFR 관광 호스팅 경험을 복합적으로 탐구함으로써 VFR과 장소감을 복합적으로 연구하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 동남아시아 한인으로 VFR 연구의 지역적 맥락을 확장했다는 데 의미가 있다.
Abstract
In the context of visiting friends and relatives (VFR), this paper explores how migrants’ hosting of friends and relatives affects the formation of a sense of place in the receiving country. Based on the literature review about the sense of place of migrants and VFR hosting, this study integrates these two research s treams. Korean migrants in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a re the study subjects. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the formation of the sense of place of the migrants through VFR hosting. Narrative analysis was conducted to interpret how the interviewees constructed their experiences that led them to form a sense of place. The results show that the formation of a sense of place is importantly influenced by their experiences in Vietnam that enable them to feel a sense of ‘home’ there. The hosting processes including preparing for hosting and spending time with the guests in Vietnam enable the hosts to build a sense of both ‘home’ and ‘away’ through experiencing new about Vietnam and rediscovering their everyday space. This study is significant in that it discovers the formation processes of a sense of place through the lens of VFR and in the context of Vietnam.
