Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare elementary science gifted and non-gifted students’ views about how useful various specific actions related to reducing global warming might be, their willingness to act and beliefs about the usefulness of actions, and the consistency between the believed usefulness of action and willingness to act. In addition, we want to explore the possibility that the potential effectiveness of environmental education can increase the willingness of specific environmental behaviors. The instrument, which consists of 16 pro-environmental actions, was administerd to science-gifted(n=29) and non-gifted(n=87) students. The results were as follows: Although elementary science gifted students showed higher levels of willingness and belief in action to reducing global warming than non-gifted students, statistically significant behavioral patterns were inconsistent. Most of the behavioral willingness to act in the consistency of willingness and belief were lower than those of the beliefs, but the science gifted students and the non-gifted students showed similar features in the consistent behaviors and the less consistent behaviors. The specific behaviors that have the greatest educational potential to increase the willingness to act in the potential effectiveness of environmental education were more common than the science gifted students.
