초록

This paper is about the 16 Chinese multi-tone characters, whose meanings or functions were not presented in Hunmongjahoe 訓蒙字會. It can be divided into two main parts as follows: searching for how the 16 meaningless or functionless multi-tones were presented in Cheonjamun 千字文 and sinjeungyouhap 新增類合, the Chosun elementary textbooks, and Dongkukjeongwoon 東國正韻, the Chosun rhyme book, and looking up the sounds, meanings and functions of the 16 relevant characters in Chinese rhyme books such as Guangyun 廣韻, Jiyun 集韻, and Zhongyuanyinyun 中原音韻. As a result, many of the meaningless multi-tones in Hunmongjahoe were not presented as a multi-tone in Cheonjamun and sinjeungyouhap, while they were multi-tone characters in Dongkukjeongwoon. Considering the tones in Dongkukjeongwoon were affected by Chinese tones, it is necessary to looking up those 16 characters in the representative Chinese rhyme books. According to the findings, it seems that the 16 meaningless multi-tones in Hunmongjahoe are closely related to Chinese sounds, since most of them were presented as multi-tones in Guangyun, Jiyun, and Zhongyuanyinyun. In addition, their tonal categories were also overlapped with one of the Chinese multi-tones in many cases. Sejin Choi, the author of Hunmongjahoe was familiar with historical Chinese sounds, and thus it is plausible that he put original Chinese tones in Hunmongjahoe.
