Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the metonymic interpretation of city names using a detailed annotation system in a large newspaper corpus and to explain the motivation for metonymic interpretation. This study identifies the actual use of metonymy, which has not been identified in previous studies of metonymy in Korean. We examined the relative proportions of literal and metonomic interpretations of city names and the proportions of different types of metonymies. The relative proportions of direct and metonomic interpretations were 84.9% and 15.1%, respectively. Among the subtypes of metonymy, the 'P' types, which corresponds to the interpretation of a city name as a person, has a high proportion of 61.8%, followed by the 'T' types, which does not correspond to the traditional metonymy type, with a proportion of 33.6%. We further analyzed the formal metonymy and syntactic influence of metonymy.
