Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the methods and key issues involved in translating early twentieth-century Korean language textbooks into contemporary Korean, focusing on specific translation cases, and to analyze the characteristics of both the source texts and their translations in order to assess the significance of these textbook texts as linguistic resources. The textbooks examined in this study are Every-day Korean (일용 조선어) and Il-Han-Yeong Samguk Daehwa (日韓英三國對話, Japanese–Korean–English Conversation). By comparing lists of nouns, verbs, adverbs, and sentence-final endings compiled from the results of POS tagging of the source texts and their contemporary translations, this study investigates the lexical characteristics of these textbooks and the differences in vocabulary between the source and translated texts. Through analyses of textbook-specific lexical features and comparative case studies of the original and translated texts, this study demonstrates not only the potential of Korean language textbook texts as linguistic data but also their value as exemplary resources for the construction of parallel corpora of historical and contemporary Korean.
