본 논문은 대한제국이 참가한 1900년 파리만국박람회의 한국 도자 출품물의 전반적인 양상을 살펴보면서 이들을 통해 대한제국 요업의 정황을 파악하고 참가에 따른 성과 및 한계를 분석하는데 초점 맞추었다. 대한제국의 위상을 세계에 알리려던 고종의 의지가 함축되고 개최국인 프랑스의 외교적 협력으로 참가한 박람회 석상에 한국 도자가 전시될 수 있었던 배경은 단지 공예품의 일원으로서 홍보되는 것에 그치지 않았다. 즉 19세기 중반 이후 이미 서구학자들에 의해 정립되기 시작한 한국도자사 원류의 세계 유포를 비롯하여 근대기에 생산된 도자들을 동시에 소개하기 위해서였다. 비록 분원(分院) 민영 이후에 생산된 도자들의 품격이 그다지 높지 못해 민예적 가치를 발휘하는데 그칠 수밖에 없었지만, 적어도 유구한 역사를 조명할 수 있었던 시대별 도자유물들은 동아시아 속 한국 도자역사를 새롭게 인식할 수 있는 근거를 제공하면서 바로잡을 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다. 서국열강의 이목을 집중시킨 한국 도자유물들은 향후 소장 열기를 더해갔으며, 이를 모티브로 한 신제품 개발로 이어지게 할 정도로 파생 효과는 적지 않았다. 이처럼 박람회 참가를 통한 유기적인 도자문화를 형성시키는 과정에서는 프랑스 외교관들이 적극적으로 가교역할을 다하였으며, 특히 초대 주조공사(駐朝公使)였던 빅토르 콜랭 드 플랑시의 조력은 박람회 참가로부터 전시에 이르는 전 과정에서 빛을 발했다. 이 박람회는 대한제국이 공식적으로 참가한 마지막 국제 행사라는 점에서 시사하는 바가 매우 크며, 한국 도자는 그 장(場)에서 다양한 해석과 비전을 제시한 대표적인 품목이었다는 점에서 주목된다.
Abstract
This thesis focuses on understanding the circumstances of the Korean empire ceramics industry and analyzing the performance and limitations of the participation by examining the overall aspects of Korean ceramic exhibits at the 1900 Paris International Exposition in which the Korean empire participated. Gojong's will to publicize the status of the Korean empire to the world was implied, and the reason Korean ceramics were able to be exhibited at the exposition in which France, the host country, participated in diplomatic cooperation, was not only promoted as a member of the crafts. In other words, it was to introduce ceramics produced in the modern period as well as the world distribution of the origins of Korean ceramics history, which had already been established by Western scholars since the mid-nineteenth century. Although the quality of the ceramics produced after the private management of the bunwon(分 院) was lacking, they had no choice but to show the value of folk crafts, at least ceramic artifacts from each era so that could illuminate the long history of the branch and be able to recognize the history of Korean ceramics in East Asia anew. Korean ceramics, which drew the attention of Western powers, increased interest in the collection in the future, and the derivation effect was substantial enough to motivate the development of new products. In the process of forming an organic ceramic culture through participation in the fair, French diplomats played a bridge role. In particular, the assistance of Victor Collin de Plancy, the first founding contractor, shined throughout the entire process from exhibition participation to the exhibition. This exhibition has great implications in that it is the last international event that the Korean empire officially participated in, and it is noteworthy in that Korean ceramics were representative items that presented various interpretations and visions in the field.
